Covid-19 undeniably has been the greatest disruptors in the healthcare realm in 2021. The deadly pandemic pushed patients, doctors, pharmaceutical companies, and payers hastily onto virtual platforms and other digital technologies that had been previously looked upon with skepticism. The unexpected experiment allowed for valuable penetrations that healthcare in 2021 could apply to fine-tune themselves—where they should land on the spectrum of virtual and in-person systems for the best care delivery, patient practice, reimbursement, and clinical research.
Though rightsizing is the over-arching problem after the virtual telehealth explosion, the new wave of healthcare also brings with it the added challenges of adjusting to changing clinical trials, encouraging digital relationships that ease physician burdens, reshaping health portfolios for growth, and building a resilient and responsive supply chain for long-term health. Capitalizing on new digital health tools, industry providers will need to determine which specialties most benefit from virtual visits and which ones don’t.
From a physician’s perspective, their workload is choked, apart from the patient load, with detailed administrative tasks and the challenge of inadequate electronic health records systems (EHRs). Never-ending drop-down menus and regulatory reporting requirements also impair physicians’ efficiency and make it harder for them to provide a good experience for their patients.
